On June 17, I turned on the MTV Movie and TV Awards with the sole purpose of seeing the kids of Stranger Things present, and little interest in who would win what award. However, a gospel voice and driving beat grabbed my attention as musical guest, Lizzo, stole the show.
Beginning the performance with a homage to Sister Act, Lizzo belted verse after verse of self-confidence – “If I’m shinin’, everybody gonna shine.” These lyrics echoed the whole performance.
To understand why this artist was so captivating, it’s necessary to know what makes Lizzo shine: body acceptance, self-love, and staying positive. And, not only does she say it, but she lives it.
It is almost impossible to listen to one of her songs without smiling and turning up the volume to bop along. If you’re not entirely convinced yet, just listen to “Juice,” and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.
“If you only listen to one song from Cuz I Love You,” says Lizzo of her latest album, “let it be this. It’s a banger, obviously, but it’s also a state of mind. At the end of the day, I want my music to make people feel good, I want it to help people love themselves.”
“Juice” has been referred to by Rolling Stone as the “first great song of 2019.” It was the leading single from Cuz I Love You and alerted the world to the craze that would soon come.
The music video, influenced heavily by 80’s pop culture, gave “Juice” the fun-loving edge it needed, while also, highlighting the meaning behind the song. The lyrics are rooted in self-love, not only for Lizzo but for everyone around her.
The song’s leading statement, “mirror, mirror on the wall don’t say it ’cause I know I’m cute,” is a vivacious opening. The message is clear – she doesn’t need affirmation from anyone else; she shines just by being herself. “I am a pioneer in creating modern self-love, body-positive music,” says Lizzo.
Why is it a Must Listen?
Lizzo is not shy about giving reasons why people should listen to her music. Whether it’s through her show-stopping lyrics, intricate beats, or social media posts, she is consistently promoting self-love and positive energy.
These themes are evident in lyrics like “Lit up like a crystal ball, that’s cool, baby, so is you” and “The juice ain’t worth the squeeze if the juice don’t look like this.”
I showed up a little late to Lizzo’s music party, but I am staying all night. This song is an excellent introduction to the singer and is the perfect song for any party, car ride, or mood boost. It’s also hard not to stand behind an artist that is promoting all the right things about loving oneself.
Lizzo recently performed on NPR’s tiny desk, and it is a must-watch. Her music is on all streaming platforms, so nothing is holding you back from getting yourself a little Juice.
